| As a prisoner for the Lord, I URGE YOU TO LIVE A LIFE Worthy OF THE CALLING YOU HAVE RECEIVED. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one spirit-just as you were called to one hope when you were called-one lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Ephesians 4: 1-6
Sunday School
Beginning in 9th grade, Sunday School (Sunday mornings from 9:45 to 10:45) expands and builds upon the same core values shaped during the Confirmation experience. Engaging, gifted, passionate teachers guide students by providing biblical teaching in cooperation with practical, relevant applications for the challenges and opportunities of high school. Students share about their real-life experiences and learn what God's Word says to them.
Beginning in the 2002-2003 school year, Redeemer's strategy for High School Sunday School shifted slightly. Rather than offering one class to speak with equal relevance to 14-year olds and 18-year olds, we designed a two-class structure, one class specifically designed for 9th-10th graders and another for 11th-12th graders.
Redeemer's pastors are convinced that (second to the family's spiritual life in worship and the sacraments) Sunday School is the first priority for our youth. In addition to High School Sunday morning classes, our Sunday morning Adult Classes provide a wide variety of topics in the cradle of sound, Biblical teaching. If your child would like to take one of these courses, understand that door is always open.
Servant Events
Several times during the year, youth and adults coordinate trips to serve people in our community, believing that since Jesus Christ "did not come to be served, but to serve," then in response to His love, we ought to serve those in need. Recent servant events have included:
- Habitat for Humanity
- Appalachian Team: Every July, from 10 to 15 youth and adults head to the Appalachian Mountains to serve families throughout the area by repairing homes
- Youth With A Mission (YWAM): Once a year, our youth travel to the East End of Richmond to help the YWAM staffers maintain their grounds
- Redeemer's Fall Carnival: Every September, Redeemer hosts a carnival for the neighborhood with tons of games and prizes
and our youth play a huge role in helping things go smoothly!
Fellowship Events
Every year, Redeemer youth have several opportunities to "hit the road" and enjoy many of the attractions of central Virginia, enjoy each other's fellowship, and grow in their relationship with Christ. Recent Fellowship Events have included:
- Skiing in the Virginia Mountains
- Rafting or Tubing on the James
- Richmond Braves or Baltimore Orioles Baseball games
- Washington Redskins Football games
- Busch Gardens or King's Dominion
- Christian concerts
- Trips to Virginia Beach
- Camping
Senior High Youth Group
In addition to Fellowship Events, Redeemer's Senior High Youth Group meets at least every other week for any number of reasons! Rock climbing at Peak Experiences, Midnight Bowling, Movie Nights at church, Bible Studies, and lots of FOOD! This fall will include a trip to LaserQuest, a servant project to be presented to the church in October, and a seven-week Bible Study on The Lord of the Rings.
Teens Encounter Christ (TEC)
A vivid portrayal of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, TEC is a weekend retreat which places teens into a "close encounter" with who Jesus was, what He did, and what it means for us today. Partnering with other Lutheran churches in the area, Redeemer Lutheran Church is committed to provide this dramatic retreat every February.
Worship Assistance
Redeemer strongly encourages youth to participate in assisting with Sunday morning worship services. Worship Assistant opportunities include:
- Reading the Scriptures (youth over 16 years old)
- Assisting with Communion (youth over 16 years old)
- Powerpoint operators
- Soundboard operators
- Ushering
- Singing with one of the choirs or the praise team (SimpleTruth)
- Playing bells, brass, or in the praise band
